Continuing our series of "Why TEFL In...?", this week we're taking a look at China. When it comes to TEFL jobs, China has a large diversity of positions available, anything from small language schools, to large institutions, international schools, and even Universities.
Your qualifications, experience level, and our help, will dictate which position you might be able to qualify for, but that's a discussion for another time. In today's article, we're going to look at all the reasons why China should be in your thoughts when choosing where to teach English in Asia.
Five Reasons To Choose China
There are definitely more than five reasons, but these are the most important.
1.) It's China
Much like Japan, China is one of those countries with a natural allure. It's so big that you could keep yourself busy for ten years, doing a whole number of different things, and still not finish. Whether you are exploring the Great Wall, discovering the almost forgotten secrets of the Terracotta Army, or simply taking in some of the more breathtaking landscapes that China has to offer, this is a country that you won't ever run out of things to do in.
2.) It's Up And Coming
Yes China has been around for thousands of years, but it's only recently come out of its shell in terms of modernization. The last 20-30 years have seen a slow and steady rise economically, and nobody doubts that China is now a major player in the world. This is a trend that isn't going to end any time soon, which means it's an exciting place to live, and there will be plenty of opportunities for you.
On that note, it's also a great opportunity to learn Chinese, which may well become a much more important language in the future. Even if it doesn't, learning a new language is always great.
3.) It's Got A Good Salary To Cost Of Living Ratio
As well as a decent salary, a lot of schools in China also offer benefits to their employees. This could be free language lessons, discounted or free accommodation, annual bonuses, and more. Of course, these really depend on the school itself.
What really matters is that even without bonuses, the pay in China is very competitive and even in the big cities the cost of living is not as high as elsewhere. You can have a decent living standard in China without breaking the bank, much like you can in Taiwan.
4.) There's Something For Everyone
Much like the point we made at the beginning, China is so big that there's something for everyone. Should you be a lover of food, you'll find a huge diversity. Prefer historical things? China definitely has that covered. Into modern culture and technology? Again, this is something that China is becoming more and more at the forefront of.
In terms of geography, China also has a vast diversity. The north and south are very different, while the west also has a different vibe. You can find variety simply by moving between the provinces though, which can be an adventure in itself.
5.) Great For Your Career
Again, because China is so large, and is a world power, there is plenty of opportunity to further your career, whether this is inside or outside of the TEFL scene. It's well known among TEFL teachers in Asia that China is where the money is, but additionally, living in Shanghai, Beijing, or one of the other cities gives you the opportunity to move into something new.
There are many, many, international companies in China, and all you have to do is knock on doors should you want to explore your options.
The Truth Is Out There!
These five reasons to TEFL in China are really just scratching the surface. The truth is that there is so much going on Chinawise that all you have to do is head there and discover for yourself. With year round start dates and a huge amount of jobs, all you need to do is make the decision to go, and then your adventure can begin.
